    WHAT ARE CONSIDERED HAZARDOUS MATERIALS?

    You need a dangerous goods shipper if your cargo falls in any hazardous class listed in the Hazardous Material Transportation Act (HMTA). Some examples of hazardous materials and danger cargo include:

    • Compressed gases
    • Corrosive materials
    • Flammable materials
    • Radioactive materials
    • Toxic materials
    Some of these are easy to identify — fireworks and poisonous chemicals, for example.     WHAT ARE THE RULES FOR HANDLING HAZARDOUS MATERIALS?

    Proper shipping of hazmat requires strict compliance with Department of Transportation (DOT) rules and any applicable, additional requirements:

    • Materials must be classified according to the DOT Safety Data Sheet and Hazardous Materials Table.
    • Based on the classification, amount, and size of the hazardous goods, they must be packaged pursuant to regulatory requirements — and labeled accordingly. Instructions for handling and disassembling the freight may need to appear on the packaging, for example, along with whatever class information, orientation arrows, and other shipper information may be outlined.

    All dangerous goods documentation and related paperwork should be clear and properly detailed both to comply with rules and regulations and to prevent unnecessary delays.
