How a container number works

Every container carries an ISO 6346 code. Knowing its parts helps you spot typos before you call the carrier.

  • Owner codeThree letters registered with BIC that identify the carrier or leasing company.
  • CategoryU for freight containers, J for detachable equipment, Z for trailers and chassis.
  • Serial numberSix digits assigned by the owner to each individual box.
  • Check digitCalculated from the first ten characters. A wrong check digit means a typo.

Container Tracking FAQ

Why does my container number show no results?

Check that you entered all 11 characters without extra letters. Some carriers only show a container after it is gated in at the terminal, which can take up to 24 hours after booking.

How often is tracking information updated?

Carriers update their systems at every event: gate in, loading, departure, transshipment, arrival and discharge. Between events the status does not change, so a container at sea can show the same status for days.

What is the difference between a container number and a B/L number?

The container number identifies one physical box and follows the ISO 6346 format. The bill of lading number identifies the whole shipment, which can include several containers. This tool tracks by container number; for a B/L use the carrier's own site from the directory.

Can LAX Freight pick up my container from the port?

Yes. We pick up containers from the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and deliver them to your warehouse or facility. Request a drayage quote and our team will plan the pickup with you.
